User experience

The big change is the introduction of a context-driven user-experience.

  1. Starting from the "global" welcome page:

    Global context

  2. The "search" available on the right hand side is used to quickly locate published data.

    Search results

  3. Selecting a search result establishes the "context" (shown as breadcrumbs along the top of the screen). The page contents update to reflect the current context, with preview, links and downloads close at hand.

There is a small context-menu with short cuts to common actions, and the breadcrumbs can be used to navigate back up to the workspace or global level.

    Layer context

  4. When logged in as an administrator additional short cuts and information is available on the page, and in the context-menu.

  5. The traditional application top-level menu is now available long the top of the screen.

Items indicate which context they work with using a small icon to their right (in the following styles will restrict the style list to those used by the current layer).

A few items have moved to allow the GeoServer menu to list all the pages available to anonymous users.

User Interface Theme

The GeoServer 3 user theme improvements are greatly informed by visual appearance of our GeoCat Map and GeoCat Live products.

  • Full responsive with dark mode support.

  • Responsive user interface adoption of two-column form layout (inspire by GeoNetwork setting page).

    Responsive Two Column Form

For GeoCat Map Theme:

  • Minor changes to logos and colors
  • GeoCat Map displayed in the toolbar, updated with release version displayed when logged in. This functionality can be disabled (or replaced using) GEOSERVER_NODE_OPTS application property.

Services

OGC API Maps

OGC API Maps is a modern web API for map images, following the OGC API - Maps 1.0.0 standard alongside the traditional Web Map Service.

  • Dataset map: Draw several collections into a single map, choosing and ordering them with the collections parameter.
  • Filtering: Maps can be filtered using CQL2 Text, CQL2 JSON or ECQL, using the queryable attributes of each collection.
  • Conformance: Optional conformance classes can be enabled or disabled from the Mapping Services settings page, see conformance tables above.

The map preview provides a palette to select collections, with the first one drawn at the bottom, and a filter for the map content.

Service Configuration

With the gradual introduction of OGCAPI services having one page for each service has changed to allow services on a topic to be managed together.

  • Raster Services

Configuration settings for raster data and imagery, including OpenGIS Web Coverage Service.

Optional: Use WCS Service Control to disable prior versions of WCS to only support the latest WCS 2.0.1.

  • Vector Services

Configuration settings for vector services as a whole, OpenGIS Web Feature Service, and OGCAPI Features.

  • Mapping Services

Configuration settings for mapping and visualization, including OpenGIS Web Map Service and OGC API Maps.

Although WMS Service Control is available both WMS 1.1.1 and WMS 1.3.0 are in active use, with many clients preferring the older WMS 1.1.1 specification lon/lat order.

  • Processing Services

Service configuration for processing and execution services including OpenGIS Web Processing Service.

  • Tiling Services

Configuration settings for tiling services including Web Map Tile Service.

Version control

Use Disabled versions to enable/disable older or unsued versions. For example this can be used to configure WFS provide only the latest WFS 2.0.0 and OGCAPI Features service.

Conformance tables

OGC API services, such as OGC API Features and OGC API Maps, list the conformance classes they offer in a conformance table on their service settings page.

Each conformance class can be left in its default state, enabled, or disabled:

  • Default follows the level of the standard: approved standards are enabled, while draft and community standards are disabled.
  • Conformance classes that are inactive are shown greyed out.
  • Related settings are taken into account, for example disabling all filter languages also disables filtering, and strict mode disables community standards.

Security

OAuth2 OpenID Connect (OIDC)

Single Sign On (SSO) integration has been reworked for OAuth2 accepting users (and roles) from external OIDC identity providers

If you previously made use of OAuth2 support (for Google, Azure, GitHub) or made use of Keycloak SSO migration will be required.

JWT Headers

The JWT Headers authentication filter accepts users (and roles) from a JSON Web Token provided in a request header, typically by a proxy or gateway in front of GeoServer.

New configuration options:

  • Allow the header to log in the built-in "admin" account: unchecked for new filters.
  • Accepted issuers (iss): required when validating the token signature.
  • Trust a roles header that is not the validated token: only for use when a proxy always removes or overwrites that header.
  • Log sensitive information: used with the JWT_HEADERS_LOGGING logging profile when troubleshooting, not for production.

New filters validate the token signature and expiry by default. Existing filters keep their stored settings, and the GeoServer log reports any filter that should be reviewed.

Contact support: For assistance reviewing your JWT Headers configuration.
